Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now it happened, when the king heard the words of the Book of the Law, that he tore his clothes. – 2 Kings 22:11

Josiah was not familiar with the word of the Lord. Somehow, by the grace of God, Josiah, “…did what was right in the sight of the Lord, and walked in all the ways of his father David” (2 Kings 22:2). He was doing well! But when Josiah finally read the word of God, he panicked! His life didn’t look like God’s word! The way the people of Judah conducted themselves under Josiah’s rule didn’t match God’s intentions for His people!

God’s word is like a mirror. Hold your life up to it, and honestly evaluate how your life compares to God’s word. Does the way you live match the way God asks you to live? Does the way you love match the way God asks you to love?

Don’t be afraid of God’s word! Let the word convict you. Let it wash over you to “sanctify and cleanse” you (Eph 5:26). We all have room to grow! Instead of turning away from the word of God because it seems impossible to keep, ask the Holy Spirit for help. You can’t change if you never admit anything’s wrong; but if you invite God in to change You, He will make “all things new” (Rev 21:5)!

Prayer:

Father, I pray You would birth a love for Your word inside of me. I don’t want to fear Your word; I want to embrace it! Help me to run to Your word, with open arms and an open heart, in Jesus’ name.
