Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But when the sun was up they were scorched, and because they had no root they withered away. – Matt 13:6

Jesus told His disciples that those without roots would wither. They would spring up “immediately” (v 5); but as soon as tribulation came, they would shrivel.

What does it mean to have roots?

Having roots means deep intimacy with God. When we know His word, we know His character; and when we know His heart, we begin to understand just how much He loves us.

Having roots means having a history with God. The older the tree, the deeper the roots. When it was time for David to fight Goliath, he was unafraid. Why? Because he had a history with God. He told King Saul, “Your servant has killed both lion and bear; and this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, seeing he has defied the armies of the living God” (1 Sam 17:36). When God has given you victory in the past, it is easy to believe for His victory in the future.

Having roots also means deep intimacy with others. “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God” (Ps 92:13). When you grow deep roots in Christian community, it will be easier to stand tall when your faith is shaken.

Grow deep roots. Get intimate with God. Build a history of faith! And get close to other believers. No matter what comes your way, you will never be shaken.

Prayer:

Father, give me deep roots! I want to experience intimacy with You like never before. I want to build a history with You! And I want to be firmly grounded in Christian community with people I can trust, in Jesus’ name!
