Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor’s provisions. – Neh 5:14

Could Nehemiah have taken the governor’s provisions? Of course! Up until that point, every man in his position had exacted bread, wine, and silver from the people at Jerusalem (see v 15). He was entitled to them, and nobody would have batted an eye! Yet Nehemiah took nothing, because he wanted to set an example for the people. He wanted to demonstrate for them that they didn’t need to rely on earthly position for provision; they needed only rely on God.

People are watching and learning from your example. Will you “take what’s yours?” Or will you only receive what is God’s best for you? Are you living a life that says “I trust God” with your actions?

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. – 1 Cor 10:23

Prayer:

Father, help me to lead by example. I know the way I live my life is important. Other people are watching me to see how followers of Jesus behave. Help me to lead by example, in Jesus’ name!
