Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. – Ex. 13:21

God always knows exactly what you need. For the people of Israel, God went before them “by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light.” Notice two things.

1) God never leaves. Day or night, He is always with you. Whether you are on top of a mountain or in the deepest part of a valley, He will lead you and guide you every step of the way! His presence will go before you. He will never leave you nor forsake you!

2) The manifestation of God’s presence changes based on what you need in the moment. Fire in the day would have served no purpose! A cloud by night would not have been visible. God knows what you need. Do you trust Him? There are two lessons to be learned here.

First, your miracle may not look like someone else’s because they have a different need than you! Don’t expect God to move for you exactly like He moved for them. You might be in daylight (victory) while someone else is in darkness (defeat).

Second, God will move in different ways over the course of your life. He may not move exactly the same from one year to the next! Wisdom means trusting God that He knows what you need better than you know what you need.

Don’t insist on fire when God wants to give you a cloud! Don’t covet someone else’s cloud when God has given you a perfectly good fire. He will give you exactly what you need in that moment; and the proper response is always a grateful heart.

Prayer:

Father, You know best! You know exactly what I need in every single moment of my life. Help me to trust You, because You know what I need better than I ever could, in Jesus’ name.
