Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights. – Jon 1:17

Jonah was running from God’s plan. Jonah refused to deliver God’s message! So what did God do? He “prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah” (v 17). That same fish protected Jonah from the wind and the wave, and brought him to safety (see Jonah 2:10).

God is gentle! Even when you run from His plan for your life, He sets up a way out. Even when you’re knee deep in disobedience, He preserves you (Psalm 68:20: “…to God the Lord belong escapes from death”). God had work for Jonah to do; and Jonah didn’t want to do it! But God didn’t kill him. God didn’t cast Jonah out of His presence! He gently restored him and put him back on dry land.

Even when you run from His presence: God will do the same for you.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for your gentleness. I don’t want to run from You anymore. I want to do what You called me to do. Give me strength to do it, in Jesus’ name!
