Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. – Ps. 46:1

Are you in trouble? God is your refuge and your strength. He is your “very present” – i.e. immediately available and responsive – help in trouble! A refuge is somewhere you go for shelter; not just to hide, but to regroup and recover. There are two things you have to know from this Scripture if you are in trouble:

1) God will give you a plan. He will give you a way out! Refuge is a place where you abandon the strategy that didn’t work, and take time to put a new strategy in place that will actually bear fruit. You may not have a plan! But He does:

Our God is the God of salvation; and to God the Lord belong escapes from death. – Ps. 68:20

2) God is your help. That means that you will not be your own savior. You won’t get yourself out of the situation! And that is good news. Because the more you rest and recover, the more God can go to work on your behalf.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” – Matt. 11:28-30

God is for you. Come to Him and rest; and He will get you through whatever you are facing in a position of victory!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for being my refuge and my strength! I am coming to You for rest. As I do, I trust that You will speak to me, and You will help me, in Jesus’ name.
