Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And he arose and came to his father. But when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him. – Lk 15:20
The father saw his son from a great way off. That means that every single day since the son had left, his father was watching and waiting, scanning the horizon for him to come home.
When the son fled, he forgot his identity. He no longer felt “worthy” (v 19) to be called a son. But the father immediately restored him. He put a robe on his son’s body to restore his righteousness, a ring on his finger to restore his authority, and sandals on his feet to restore his dignity. He killed the fatted calf, and everyone ate and celebrated!
You are who God says you are. Even if you feel like less than a servant, He says you are no less than a son. You are a child of God: no matter how long you’ve been gone, no matter what you’ve done, and no matter where you’ve been. Come home. Your loving Father wants to welcome you with open arms.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for calling me Your child! I know I am not worthy to ask for forgiveness; but I also know you give it to me anyway when I trust in Jesus Christ. Thank You for calling me home!
