Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And when the Pharisees saw it, they said to His disciples, “Why does your Teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” When Jesus heard that, He said to them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” – Matt 9:11-12

Church shouldn’t be full of perfect, healthy people. It should be full of real people with genuine problems who need help from Heaven. And you know what? Your life shouldn’t be full of perfect, healthy people either!

Jesus made a habit of eating with sinners. Why? Because sinners are the people who really need salvation! The sick are the ones who really need healing. The addicts are the ones who really need deliverance. The lonely and socially awkward are the ones who really need family. Jesus wasn’t embarrassed to eat with the outcasts of His day; He was honored!

We need to be okay with “messy” and “sloppy” in the church. God calls us to preach the Gospel to the world! We can’t reach the world if we only minister to pretty people. You can’t reach the lost if you don’t have unsaved friends!

Prayer:

Father, send me out to reach the lost! Make me comfortable dealing with people who may be a little unorthodox. Make me comfortable praying with people who don’t have all their ducks in a row! I want to reach the world for Jesus: one lost soul at a time!
