Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And it came to pass, when she pestered him daily with her words and pressed him, so that his soul was vexed to death, that he told her all his heart… – Judges 16:16-17a
Samson was strong, and he knew it; but before long, Samson’s strength went to his head. He entertained Delila’s pleas to know the secret to His strength. She wasn’t even concealing her strategy anymore: she obviously wanted him dead, because every time Samson shared the “secret” to his strength, she tried to use the information to kill him! But Samson ignored his vulnerability. He allowed her to play with him, and put him in a position where he forgot just how vulnerable he really was. He was so drunk on his own strength that he continued to play with fire until he got burned. We see just how far Samson strayed from God, because he did not even realize that the Lord had departed from him (Judges 16:20).
Samson boasted in his own strength, and it led to his downfall. Paul, on the other hand, boasted in his weakness; and the power of God rested upon him (2 Cor 12:9). But for the Lord, we are all weak. When we lean on His strength instead of our own, He makes us strong!
Don’t play with fire. Never entertain the enemy, no matter how invincible you feel. Instead of boasting in your strength, boast in the Lord!
Prayer:
Father, I am frail on my own; but in You, I am invincible. Keep me strong, and keep me boasting in the Lord, in Jesus’ name!
