Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

But the thing displeased Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” So Samuel prayed to the Lord. – 1 Sam 8:6

Samuel’s first line of defense was prayer. The people of Israel made a decision and he didn’t agree. He was displeased! He was upset! But he didn’t respond by kicking and screaming, and insisting they were wrong. He took his passionate emotion and used it to pray.

How do you respond when someone says something and you don’t agree? How do you deal with your emotion when someone makes you angry? Do you reply right off the bat and say something you regret? Do you internalize it and let it simmer deep down until your blood starts to boil?

Are you displeased? Are you angry? Take it to God. He will tell you exactly what to do with it.

Prayer:

Father, I pray my first line of defense would always be prayer! Whenever something goes right, remind me to pray. Whenever something goes wrong, remind me to pray!
