Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year; and David inquired of the Lord. And the Lord answered, “It is because of Saul and his bloodthirsty house, because he killed the Gibeonites.” – 2 Sam 21:1

Don’t be discouraged by setbacks! David had just returned as king over Israel after quashing a rebellion; but all his problems were far from over. Out of nowhere, he faced a famine. This was a major setback; and it lasted three years! So how did David respond? He asked God why there was a famine, and God told him!

David could have used the famine as an excuse to get bitter. He could have started to question God’s promise because everything wasn’t going right! But David didn’t waste time whining. He didn’t allow adverse circumstances to cause him to question God; he simply went to God and asked him a question! God, why is this happening? And when David asked, God answered!

Move past your discouragement and frustration, and ask for understanding! Go straight to the Source, and “inquire of the Lord.” God will show you what’s causing the struggle, and tell you what to do to make it right!

Prayer:

Father, I don’t want to get lost in bitterness and frustration. I pray You would speak to me, and tell me why things are happening in my life the way they are. If there’s something I need to change, tell me and I will change it! If there’s patience I need to develop, tell me and I will develop it. I love You, and I trust You, in Jesus’ name!
