Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

At Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” – 1 Kings 3:5

We should never discount the importance of dreams. Too often, we brush dreams off as meaningless. We wake up, either shaken or encouraged by a dream, and then we forget about it by the time we finish our morning cup of coffee.

God communicates often to His people through dreams. God spoke to Solomon in a dream. That experience would turn out to be the most significant encounter in Solomon’s life. We also see the New Testament start with a flurry of dream activity. God spoke to Joseph five times through dreams before and after the birth of Jesus (Matt 1:20, 2:12, 2:13, 2:19, and 2:22). I believe that sets the precedent that, under the New Covenant, we are meant to hear from God in dreams all the time!

So, how do you know if a dream is from God? Gauge its significance. If your dream means nothing to you, you probably just ate a bad slice of pizza before you went to bed. But if your dream communicates a clear message, do not discount the chance that it might be a message from God.

If it’s a good dream, be encouraged! Set out with full confidence that God is confirming what He wants you to do. If it’s a bad dream, be encouraged! A bad dream is a reminder to pray, pray, and then pray some more. I have had dreams where bad things happen to good people who are close to me. I always take it as a reminder: this is what could happen if you don’t pray.

Write down your dreams! God is speaking to you, even when you sleep. Are you listening?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for the power of dreams! I invite You to speak to me during the night hours. You spoke to Solomon through dreams, and You spoke to Joseph through dreams. Now I ask that You would speak to me through dreams, in the name of Jesus!
