Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
They were very able men for the work of the service of the house of God. – 1 Chron. 9:13
Scripture here is describing the Levites who ministered as priests in Jerusalem. Their job was to worship God in His temple around the clock. They were “free from other duties; for they were employed in that work day and night” (v 33). They weren’t going out to battle against Israel’s enemies; they were ministering to the Lord! But Scripture notes they were “very able,” which is translated as “strong and mighty” (Hebrew Chayil, Strong’s H2428).
You’ve heard of David’s mighty men, haven’t you? David was a warrior king! He was a “mighty man” and those who were with him were “valiant men” (2 Sam. 17:10). The word used for “valiant” in the original Hebrew text is Chayil: the same word used to describe the priests at Jerusalem! David’s mighty men were physically mighty, and the priests were spiritually mighty! But the word used to describe each group was the same.
God has called you to be mighty! But your “might” might look different than someone else’s. David’s men were mighty in battle! But the priests were mighty in service to the house of the Lord. And both types of strength were equally important to Jerusalem. Don’t despise the strength God has given you. You might not feel as mighty as a warrior charging into battle! But God has called you to be mighty in your own unique way.
Father, thank You for making me mighty! I am well able to do what You have called me to do! And whether I am physically going into battle or spiritually warring against the powers and principalities of this world, my declaration is the same: I am doing it all for You, in Jesus’ name!
