Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. – Neh 7:5

One of the ways God speaks to us is by “putting [something] into our heart.” We are spirit beings; we live in a body, and we have a soul. God’s Holy Spirit communicates with our spirit, and that process sometimes does not coincide perfectly with the way our souls (mind, will and emotions) process what He is saying.

God put His plans into Nehemiah’s heart. There was no big booming voice from heaven. Nehemiah did not fast and pray for days before receiving an answer. God simply deposited a plan into Nehemiah’s heart, the same way He set the stars in the firmament of heaven (Gen 1:17; Hebrew nathan).

Do you ever just know God is telling you to do something? Do the instructions you’re receiving line up with God’s word? Do the wise men and women in whom you trust agree with what you’re about to do? Set out and do what God has called you to do, knowing that God has put His plans into your heart.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for putting Your plans into my heart. I know you fill me with thoughts and ideas, so that I can go out and exercise obedience. Help me to confidently fulfill the calling You have put on my life, knowing that the thoughts and plans in my heart are from You!
