Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

So it was, from that time on, that half of my servants worked at construction, while the other half held the spears, the shields, the bows, and wore armor; and the leaders were behind all the house of Judah. – Neh 4:16

As time went on, Nehemiah had to devote more resources to keeping watch and making sure the enemy could not tear down God’s work. In the context of the New Testament church, this means that as we expand, we must station more people to pray. As we move forward to build God’s kingdom through prayer, we must always remember to pray for everything He’s already established.

Not every person’s ministry will be outward expansion. Just as important, and just as worthy of praise, are those who protect what has been built through intercessory prayer.

What has God already established in your life, and your personal ministry? Has He given you a beautiful family? Favor in your workplace? Before you move forward, make time to pray for everything you already have.

Prayer:

Father, help me to make time to pray. I know that if I build it myself, I have to maintain it; but if You build my life up for me, You will maintain it when I pray! Strengthen everything You have given me, in Jesus’ name.
