Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” What profit has a man from all his labor in which he toils under the sun? – Eccl 1:2-3
Is what you’re laboring for going to give you the reward you want? Is what you’re working towards really going to take you where you want to go?
The writer of Ecclesiastes is most often assumed to be Solomon, David’s son. Solomon is reflecting. He’s having what we would call “a moment.” He’s young, rich, and successful; but he’s still not happy. And he’s forced to realize that many of the things he thought would make him happy and add purpose to his life, just aren’t having the intended effect.
What do you want your life to look like? Take a moment to step back and look at the big picture. When you leave this earth, what do you want your legacy to be? Are you taking the practical steps to get there, and genuinely doing what God has called you to do?
Perspective is everything. Don’t forget about the big picture! Don’t charge through life without pausing to think about what you’re doing and why. If you want to live for God, are the choices you’re making contributing towards that goal?
Prayer:
Father, keep me honest. Help me to judge my life according to how effective my work is for You. Thank You for all the many ways You are moving, and all the amazing things You are doing, in Jesus’ name!
