Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving… – Col 4:2

To be vigilant means to actively and attentively watch: to “take heed lest through remission and indolence some destructive calamity suddenly overtake” you (Strong’s G1127). We shouldn’t just launch into prayer without asking God what to pray for first. We should continue in intentional prayer, watching for God to tell us what to pray.

God’s Holy Spirit will show us things we should pray for, and also show us things we must pray against. He will cause pictures of people’s faces to come up in our thoughts so we can pray for them. He will remind us to lift up our city, our friends, and our families: the people around us who are in most desperate need of prayer. Best of all, He will show us what to pray for before calamity strikes, not after. The purpose of vigilance is to be prepared and unafraid.

As we give thanks and praise Him for the victory in advance, our prayers are as good as answered.

Prayer:

Father, help me to pray earnestly, with vigilance and thanksgiving. Help me to praise You in advance, knowing that everything I ask for is done in Jesus’ name!
