Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

This He established in Joseph as a testimony, when He went throughout the land of Egypt, where I heard a language I did not understand. – Ps 81:5

Asaph wrote this Psalm many generations after Joseph died. Asaph had never personally heard the language of Egypt. However, he counted his spiritual ancestor’s personal experience as his own!

The message for us is clear: we should build on the spiritual experiences of the men and women who have come before us. We don’t have to build trust in God from scratch. He has given us His word so we don’t have to wonder if He is faithful. We can know with full confidence that He is the God who supplies everything we need!

Surround yourself with men and women who have amazing testimonies of a Spirit-filled life. Research the lives of generals of our faith who have radically trusted in God, and seen Him deliver them from all evil. Then, ask God to build on that base. Ask Him to take you into new territory, knowing that He has already given every piece of ground into your hand!

Prayer:

Father, thank You that I don’t have to start from scratch. You have given me Your word so I can know You are faithful. You have surrounded me with people who have miraculous testimonies so I can trust in You the way they do! I want to do something great with my life, in Jesus name!
