Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him. – 1 Thess. 5:9-10

If you’re reading this, you now have something to celebrate. You know the truth! You know that God didn’t create you to simply live and die; He created you to give you salvation through Jesus Christ. Jesus died once for all[1] so that you can live forever. You don’t have to fear death anymore! Because whether you “wake or sleep” – whether you’re dead or alive! – you will live together with Him.

Jesus died for you. The God of the Universe came to earth as a Man and died in your place. You want to be in Heaven! But Heaven requires perfection. And you’re not perfect, so you had a problem. Past tense. But Jesus is perfect. He stepped in and lived the perfect life you could never live, and then died the perfect death that should have been your destiny. He did it so that you, when you believe in Him, can have eternal life.

Aren’t you so glad this morning that God has a plan for you? Aren’t you happy that you are one of the “appointed” ones who gets to hear about Jesus? Aren’t you grateful that “death” for you simply means passing into eternal life? You have Jesus, and that is reason to celebrate.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for saving me! Thank You that even though I deserve death, Jesus came to give me life. I don’t have to fear death anymore! Because when I die, I know where I am going: right by Your side, for an eternity in Your presence.
