Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Moreover he must have a good testimony among those who are outside…” (1 Tim 3:7). Paul lists something counterintuitive among the qualifications for an overseer in the church. He must have a good testimony among those who are outside the church. In other words, he must be friends with people who are not Christians! One of the most practical ways we can learn how to witness to unbelievers is very simple: talk to them. Spend time with them. Love them as Christ Himself would. Answer their questions about Jesus and respond to their concerns about living a life of faith. Our responsibility is to hate sin, but love the sinner. How is your testimony with those who are outside?
Prayer:
Father, help me to be a good friend to people outside the church. Help me not to judge people who believe in misguided theories, but rather to lead them gently to the Truth!
