Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“Fight the good fight of faith…” (1 Tim 6:12). Thank God He didn’t tell us to fight the good fight of righteousness! The battle is not physical; we do not have to physically prove our righteousness to God. Jesus has already done that on our behalf. All that is left for us to do is trust in His finished work on the Cross. Fight the good fight of faith, because it is through faith that we achieve righteousness.
The battle for faith is not physical, but rather spiritual. The enemy knows the power of faith, and will try to convince you not to believe in God and His promises for your life. It is for this reason that the psalmist encourages us to talk to our souls, and command ourselves to bless the Lord (Ps 103:1). It is for this reason that Jesus warns us that the enemy only comes to “…steal, and to kill, and to destroy” (Jn 10:10).
“Whoever has no rule over his own spirit is like a city broken down, without walls” (Prov 25:28). Fight the good fight of faith.
Prayer:
Father, strengthen me to fight the good fight of faith. Help me to resist the traps and snares the enemy sets for me, knowing that my eternal destiny is firmly established in You!
