Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But they said, “We will drink no wine, for Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall drink no wine, you nor your sons, forever.” – Jer 35:6
Jeremiah was a prophet. When he told someone to do something, his words carried weight! But when Jeremiah told the Rechabites to drink wine, they refused. Why? Because the word of God they had received up until that point was, “You shall drink no wine.”
If the command someone else gives you doesn’t agree with the command God has already spoken to your heart, be careful! Just because someone else is telling you to do it – no matter how anointed they are – doesn’t mean it’s right! You are responsible for your own choices. If God told you not to do it, don’t do it: no matter what anyone else says! If God told you do it, do it! And don’t let anyone stop you.
This is why you need a personal relationship with God through prayer! This is also why you need to get to know His heart by reading His word. You are ultimately responsible for discerning the word of the Lord over your own life.
Prayer:
Father, thank You for speaking to me. I know I can hear Your voice in prayer! I know I can see Your command in Your Word. Help me to have my own relationship with You, so I don’t have to run my life off someone else’s!
