Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
O Lord, how manifold are Your works! In wisdom You have made them all. The earth is full of Your possessions… – Ps. 104:24
David was a blessed man. By the time his son Solomon became king, David had amassed tremendous wealth. He donated, “…one hundred thousand talents of gold and one million talents of silver, and bronze and iron beyond measure” (1 Chron. 22:14) to his son Solomon for the construction of the temple at Jerusalem. The gold alone was worth 205 billion dollars in today’s money.[1] The silver would be worth 25 billion dollars; not to mention the “bronze and iron beyond measure…[plus] timber and stone also.” And this was not everything David owned; just what he donated!
So how did a man who grew up a shepherd get so wealthy? He acknowledged God as the source of his blessings! He sang to God that the earth is “full of Your possessions” (Ps. 104:24). David knew that nothing in this world belonged to him! It all belonged to God. So he humbled himself and paid God the tribute He was due. He laid down his life in service to God, and in response God gave him everything David could ever desire.
We don’t serve God to get material things! But we can expect that when we serve Him with our whole heart, He will give us what we need. He will bless us beyond measure! When we acknowledge that everything we have is His, He will give us so much more.
Prayer:
Father, I want to be like David! I know that You are the source of every blessing I could ever receive. Thank You for blessing me so abundantly, in Jesus’ name!
