Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

…Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. – Heb 7:22

Our New Covenant with God through Jesus Christ is better than the Old Covenant! The word for “better” in the original Greek language means “more useful, serviceable, advantageous, and excellent” (Strong’s G2909). Our New Covenant is better than the Old Covenant in every way!

Under the Old Covenant, God’s people had to offer up sacrifices to God every single day for their sin (see v 27). It must have been exhausting! Every time you sinned by accident, you had to present yourself to God’s priest; and if you sinned on purpose, you would be cast out of the city!

Under the New Covenant, however, everything changes. Jesus has offered Himself as our substitute: “once for all” (v 27). Because Jesus chose to give His life for you, there is no more sacrifice required! You don’t have to work for God’s favor! You don’t have to try to be perfect! You don’t have to earn your way into God’s good graces. God’s good grace is a gift He gives freely to all who believe in Jesus!

Aren’t you glad you have a new and better covenant through Jesus?

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your grace! Thank You for our New Covenant through Jesus Christ! I don’t deserve Your love; but You love me all the same.
