Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“Therefore I also gave them up to statutes that were not good, and judgments by which they could not live…” – Ezek 20:25

God knew His people would never be able to live up to Old Covenant Law. He didn’t give His people the Law so they would be bound; but so that they might be set free. The purpose of the Old Covenant was to prove our imperfection: to demonstrate our need for forgiveness, and to point us to Jesus Christ! Jesus fulfilled the Old Covenant, and enacted the New Covenant by His blood. We step into our New Covenant of grace by believing in Jesus!

None of us is perfect; and nothing demonstrates that better than Old Covenant Law. James reflected that, “…whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all” (Jas 2:10). Unless you’re perfect, you’re imperfect! That is why you need Jesus.

When you meet God face to face for judgment, He’s not going to compare you to a murderer or a grand larcenist; He’s going to compare you to Jesus Christ: the Standard of perfection. How will you stack up? If you roll the dice and just “try to live a good life,” you will come up short; but if you trust in Jesus, “…your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Col 3:3).

Prayer:

Father, thank You I am alive on this side of the Cross. I can’t imagine how hard life must have been under the Law; and I am so thankful that is not my reality. Thank You for our New Covenant, in Jesus’ name!
