Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Then it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “Lest perhaps the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” – Ex 13:17
God doesn’t always lead you straight to the end goal. The direct route from Egypt to the Promised Land was through Palestine; but if the Israelites had passed through the land of the Philistines, they would have turned back! If the people of Israel had gone into battle too soon, they would have given up and returned to captivity.
God will not lead you into difficult situations until you are ready for them! It might “seem” like you’re taking the long way around. You might wish there were a shorter path! But He is preserving you for your own good.
Don’t despise the process! Don’t rush through life, wishing you were “more successful” or “better off” than you already are. God has you on His path for you; and His path is always the best route!
Prayer:
Father, thank You for steering me in the right direction! I trust the path You have for my life, and I thank You for sheltering me from experiences that would leave me discouraged and afraid, in Jesus’ name!
