Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (1 Jn 2:6). Sin is inevitable. All of us will fall short in some way, shape or form. John tells us in advance that whenever we sin, Jesus Christ is our Advocate with the Father. His finished work on the Cross guarantees that our relationship with God cannot change as long as we rely on Jesus Christ. However, John also draws a firm line when it comes to character development. Our goal as Christians should be to walk just as Christ walked. Our task is to love God with everything we have, and love our brothers and sisters (i.e. the people around us) as a natural overflow of our love for God. If we claim to love God but cannot even love the people to our left and right, we are making a faulty claim! We must strive to be everything Jesus IS. We will fall short; but the inevitability of imperfection is not cause to stop striving for Perfection Himself.
Prayer:
Father, help me to walk just as Jesus walked! If He did it, I want to do it. I want to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead and cast out demons in His name! Build my character according to Your perfect design.
