Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments….And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. – 1 Jn 3:22-23
Thank God the Bible defines the Bible! As we read verse 22, we find that we receive what we ask when we keep God’s commandments. But what does it mean to “keep His commandments?” Does that mean if we mess up and do one thing wrong, we won’t receive? Certainly not! Verse 23 defines exactly what it means to keep God’s commandments: to believe on the name Jesus, and to let His love pour out of us!
Under the Old Covenant, to “keep God’s commandments” meant living a perfect life and upholding every article of Levitical Law; but under our New Covenant of grace, to “keep God’s commandments” simply means to believe in Jesus!
Jesus kept every commandment because God knew we wouldn’t be able to. He fulfilled God’s requirement for perfect obedience; and He did it for us! All that’s left for us to do is enjoy the loving relationship with God Jesus purchased on the Cross!
Prayer:
Father, thank You that faith in Jesus is enough. Faith in Jesus is enough to unlock the blessings Your people receive for obedience. Faith in Jesus is enough to be a child of God! Faith in Jesus is all I ever need.
