Hear the word of the Lord, you children of Israel, for the Lord brings a charge against the inhabitants of the land: “There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed.” – Hosea 4:1-2
Why is morality so important? The Oxford Dictionary defines morality as “principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior.” Do you believe in right and wrong? Do you instinctively know that some things are good (helping people), while others are bad (hurting people)? Politicians often speak of “common morality” – the morality shared by a community. But as you look around the United States today, one thing is painfully clear: morality is expiring. We cannot agree any longer on what is wrong and what is right.
And here is why that’s a problem. The erosion of Christian values (v 1) precedes the destruction of morality (v 2). Said a different way: when we lose sight of Jesus, people start “lying, killing and stealing” (v 2)! The less we care about Jesus as a society, the less we will act like Him as a people. You act the way you think. The only solution to the moral crisis which our world is facing today is to resurrect the “knowledge of God in the land” (v 1): to put our eyes back on Jesus and to open our hearts to Him!
Will you pray that God would open our eyes to just how far we have strayed from His will? To just how far we have fallen from His feet? The one and only answer to the problems we are facing today is Jesus!
Prayer:
Lord, make me a bold and unapologetic witness for Jesus Christ in my city! I want to preach the Gospel. I want to do my part to get people around me to see just how necessary Jesus is. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life! There is no other way but Jesus.
