Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then he who had received the one talent came and said, ‘Lord, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you have not sown, and gathering where you have not scattered seed. And I was afraid, and went and hid your talent in the ground. Look, there you have what is yours.’- Matt 25:24-25

This is the Parable of the Talents. A man delivered money to each of his servants: five talents to one, two talents to another, and one talent to the third. The servant with five talents doubled his money; and the servant with two talents did the same. But the servant with only one talent was afraid. He hid what he was given in the ground; and when his master returned, he received no reward.

Fear paralyzes. The first two servants knew what we should know: their master had equipped them to go out and multiply! They didn’t need to worry about losing what they had. Their master had given them gifts because He trusted them; and from that place of confident love, they went out and expanded their blessings.

The third servant, however, did not know how loving & trusting his master really was. He didn’t have a relationship with his master; and because of that deficit, he could not use what he had been given.

When we don’t understand how much God loves us, we become paralyzed with fear. But when we receive and embrace the Father’s love, we are free to worship Him with our lives! We are released to go out and use what He has given us to expand His Kingdom. He blesses you because He trusts you to go out and multiply His blessings!

God is not a “hard man;” He is a loving Father. Take what He has given you, and use it for good. When you meet Him at the end of your life, He will speak over you the same words He spoke over Jesus: you are His beloved child, and in you He is well pleased!

Prayer:

Father, help me to be faithful with the things you’ve given me. Keep me from jealously wondering why I didn’t start out with more talents, and simply help me to use what I already have for good!
