Commentary from Pastor Mike White:
“Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you” (Gen 13:17). God promised Abraham everything he could see: “…northward, southward, eastward and westward” (Gen 13:14). But He did not stop there. After His promise, God gave Abraham instructions. Action was required.
He instructed Abraham to take a prayer walk! As Abraham walked over the territory God had given to him, it became his possession. Prayer walks – physically walking through territory and claiming it for God through prayer – are extremely powerful. We see the same spiritual principle at work throughout the course of Israel’s history.
God told Moses to take possession of new territory for Him by walking: “Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the River Euphrates, even to the Western Sea, shall be your territory” (Deut 11:24). If Moses walked on it, it belonged to God! Then God repeated those same instructions to Joshua: “Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses” (Josh 1:3). Joshua felt unqualified, but God reassured Him that if he walked on it, it belonged to Him!
When we go on prayer walks, we retake possession of our streets, neighborhoods and cities from Satan. We claim territory for God that is rightfully His!
Prayer:
Father, I give You full permission to send me on prayer walks: in my neighborhood, in my city, and all over the world. I know that physically walking over territory is very powerful. Help me never to back down when You call me to tread on new territory and take it back for Your Kingdom, in Jesus’ name!
