CityLight Pastor Commentary:

There is a difference between reading the Bible and having Scripture illuminated for you by the Holy Spirit. Jesus frequently responds to the Pharisees by questioning whether they had ever read a section of Scripture. Of course they had! The scribes and Pharisees knew what the text said inside and out. Jesus was not challenging their memorization; He was challenging their practical understanding. One of the most useful questions we can ask when reading Scripture is, ‘What does this text tell me about Jesus Christ?’ The scribes and Pharisees had read the words, but they were missing the Word’s Fulfillment right in front of their eyes. Every word, line and story in the Bible – Old Testament and New – points to Jesus Christ. Every sentence fragment and phrase tells us something about Him which we must know. Let the Holy Spirit reveal God’s Only Son to you!

Prayer:

“Father, thank You that Jesus Christ lives in every line of the Bible. As I read every day, I ask that Your Holy Spirit would bring the words to life for me. Show me how everything points directly to the Cross, and Your Only Son Jesus Christ dying for my sins!”
