CityLight Pastor Commentary:

God has just promised His people that He will walk among them and be present in their midst (Lev 26:12). Then, God’s instruction turns to administration. Moses is instructed to take a census of all the men in Israel and appoint generals for the Israeli army. Then he specifies where each of the tribes of Israel should camp, as well as the provisions necessary to adequately care for God’s tabernacle. We learn here that God values order. He follows the promise of His presence with specific plans to host Him effectively: something so profound and amazing is followed by such tedious instruction! In order to effectively host His Presence, we must build an adequate framework. Sometimes the mundane must precede the supernatural; but that does not make the mundane any less holy.

Prayer:

“Father, help me to take pleasure in the administrative! Even the smallest, most seemingly insignificant tasks can glorify You when done well. Help me never to get discouraged from building Your Kingdom one brick at a time!”
