CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Those who trust in their wealth and boast in the multitude of their riches, none of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him— for the redemption of their souls is costly…” (Ps 49:6-8). If we don’t have God, we don’t have anything. All the money in the world cannot buy salvation. When we die and are judged, we won’t be able to redeem our own soul, or anyone else’s. God doesn’t care how much money you have in your bank account, and He doesn’t keep a list of good deeds that will determine whether or not you get into heaven. Jesus Christ paid the ultimate price so that we would be reconciled to God. He gave His life as a ransom for many (Mk 10:45), and paid a price we could never pay. When we rely on Him as our Savior, we are granted a salvation that no amount of money can buy.

Prayer:

“Father, thank You that Jesus Christ gave His life as a ransom for ME! Help me to lay up treasures in heaven: time spent in Your presence, and souls added to Your Kingdom. I want the eternal riches that only You can provide!”
