Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

Whenever the cloud was taken up from above the tabernacle, after that the children of Israel would journey; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would pitch their tents. – Num 9:17

When God moved, the children of Israel would follow suit. When God’s presence settled over a given place, the Israelites planted roots.

God’s presence is a key ingredient in our lives. Without His presence, our life’s work will seem empty and laborious; but when we settle where He has called us, living for Him will be life-giving and effortless.

During the journey into the Promised Land, Moses made this request to God: “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here” (Ex 33:15). My prayer is that we would all adopt that attitude in our lives. Too often, we start down the path we want to take and ask God to bless us. Instead, we should follow His presence. If He leads us somewhere new, He will cause us to prosper in that place!

Prayer:

Father, thank You for Your presence! I don’t want to go anywhere unless Your presence precedes me. When You move, I will move; and if You don’t desire movement, help me not to become restless. I simply want to enjoy Your presence!
