Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the multitude of Your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. – Ps. 51:1-2

We all need a good washing. Our sin makes us dirty: unclean and unfit for the presence of God! But the blood of Jesus washes us clean. His Word washes us from the top of our heads to the bottoms of our feet. The goodness of God makes us whole!

After the Last Supper, Jesus, “…rose from supper…poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet” (Jn. 13:4-5). Peter tried to refuse the gesture: “’You shall never wash my feet!’ But Jesus answered him, ‘If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me.’ [So] Peter said to Him, ‘Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!’” (Jn. 13:8-9).

God doesn’t want to wash you just a little bit. He wants to wash you thoroughly! You need a good washing. A little bit of washing won’t do! Let Jesus wash your feet. Let the Word of God cleanse your hands and your head! Let the grace and mercy of God wash over you as you experience wave after wave of God’s all-consuming presence. You will emerge from your encounter with Jesus clean and made whole; and you will never be the same.

Prayer:

Father, don’t wash me just a little. Wash me thoroughly! Cleanse me from my sin. I am dirty. I am messed up! But You are the God who makes me clean, in Jesus’ name.
