Commentary from Pastor Mike White:

…that you may look…and remember all the commandments of the Lord and do them, and that you may not follow the [sinful tendencies] to which your own heart and your own eyes are inclined… – Num 15:39

God gave us His word for our own good! He left us a testimony of His word so that we could benefit from it: not so that we would be crushed under its weight.

God provides wise counsel for us in many forms. We see His wisdom in His word, which is the primary means He uses to speak to us. There is immense value in corporate worship; a community of proven friends and trustworthy family goes a long way. When we seek God’s will, He promises to redeem us from the sinful tendencies to which our flesh is naturally inclined.

We all need recalibration from time to time. If left unchecked, our heart and eyes are inclined towards the things of the flesh. But when we allow God’s Holy Spirit to refresh us, the lusts of the flesh will lose their luster!

Jeremiah 17 says that, “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked…” But Jeremiah modifies this hopeless refrain by the end of his prophecy. In Jeremiah 24, God promises, “I will give [my people] a heart to know Me, that I am the Lord; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God, for they shall return to Me with their whole heart.” God’s Holy Spirit, poured out on all flesh, will quench our sinful tendencies, and make His desires our own!

Our flesh is imperfect. But when we yield to His will, God will work perfection through us!

Prayer:

Father, I need You. Redeem my sinful flesh. I don’t want a wicked heart; I want a heart to know You! Bless me in that way, in Jesus’ mighty name!
