Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
“’But the person who does anything presumptuously, whether he is native-born or a stranger, that one brings reproach on the Lord, and he shall be cut off from among his people.” – Num. 15:30
Under Old Covenant law, anyone who sinned “unintentionally” (v 22) could be forgiven. But the person who sinned “presumptuously” – premeditated, or on purpose – would be “cut off from among his people.” To “cut off” is the Hebrew karath (Strong’s H3772), which means to eliminate or kill. If anyone sinned on purpose, they were dead!
Aren’t you so glad you live under the New Covenant? If you’re like me, you’ve sinned. On purpose. You’ve missed the mark when it comes to God’s holy law. But thank God the penalty for us is no longer death. Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died in your place! The wages of sin is death (Rom. 6:23), but Jesus already paid them for you. He died so that you could live. He gave up His life so that you could be free!
Jesus already paid the price; and that means there is no further payment required from you. Jesus already suffered the wrath of God that you deserve for your sin! And that means there is no wrath left for you.
Prayer:
God, thank You for Jesus! I am so grateful for everything Jesus did for me. He died in my place. He suffered so I don’t have to! He absorbed the just punishment that I deserve for my sin, so that I could have eternal life. Praise be to God!
