CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“Now it came to pass, as he finished speaking all these words, that the ground split apart under them, and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households and all the men with Korah, with all their goods” (Num 16:31-32). Korah and his friends saw fit to rebel against God. They had a problem with God-given authority and thought they should be exalted instead of Moses and Aaron. God showed them just how wrong they were; as punishment for their insolence they were swallowed up into the earth along with their entire households. Korah was a Levite: charged with maintaining order in God’s sanctuary. What you may not know is this: despite Korah’s disobedience, God continued to honor his descendants. His descendants, to whom the Bible refers as the Sons of Korah, ended up writing 11 out of the 150 Psalms in the Bible. Talk about a people who knew redemption and forgiveness firsthand! The Sons of Korah were not only forgiven for the sins of their ancestors, but then exalted and lifted up so that their songs were recorded in God’s Holy Writ for all of eternity!

Prayer:

“Father, thank You for restoration and redemption! Even when we fall, the Cross of Your Son Jesus Christ supports us and lifts us up!”
