Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. – Mk 15:38

What was the veil? Why is the veil important to us as New Testament believers? What does its’ tearing mean for our relationship with God?

God instructed Moses to, “…make a veil woven of blue, purple, and scarlet thread, and fine woven linen” (Ex 26:31). Then, the people of Israel were to, “…bring the ark of the Testimony…behind the veil,” so that the veil could be a divider, “…between the holy place and the Most Holy” (Ex 25:33).

The veil separated God’s presence from His people. The only person allowed to go into the Most Holy Place – directly into God’s presence – was the High Priest. If anyone else so much as tried to go behind the veil, he would be struck dead! According to Jewish tradition, the veil was four inches thick. Some historians relate that the veil was so thick that, “…horses tied to each side could not pull it apart” (Ryrie Study Bible, NASV, Moody Press).

The veil was thick; it was meant to be a permanent divider between God’s people and His presence. But the Cross changed all that. When Jesus died on the Cross, the veil was torn in two, from top to bottom. Heaven invaded earth, and from that day forward, God’s people would have access to His presence.

Because of the Cross, God is always available. Jesus removed every barrier to experiencing His presence when He died on the Cross for your sins!

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. – Heb 4:16

Prayer:

Father, thank You that every obstacle to Your presence has been removed. Thank You that I get to come boldly before Your throne, knowing I will find mercy at Your feet!
