Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. – Lk 10:33
The Samaritans and the Jews did not get along. The Jewish people detested the mixed marriages and polytheistic worship of their Samaritan neighbors. Yet Jesus tells a story of a Jewish man who is mugged and left for dead, and a Samaritan man who happens upon him. The Samaritan man would have had every right – and every excuse – to walk right on by, and pretend he hadn’t seen a thing. But he stopped, and he helped.
The Samaritan was moved with compassion (Greek splagchnizomai; Strong’s #4697). He operated with a level of supernatural care that only God’s Holy Spirit can inspire. He knew he would gain nothing in return; yet he still did everything he could for this man whom he did not know. Why? Because it was the right thing to do.
Jesus was moved with compassion throughout Scripture. Whenever He was moved with compassion, people were healed (Matt 9:36, Matt 14:14, Matt 20:34), cleansed (Mk 1:41), fed (Matt 15:32), forgiven (Matt 18:27, Lk 15:20), and strengthened (Mk 6:34). When Jesus was moved with compassion, miracles happened! And when you and I are moved with compassion in His name, supernatural healing will take place.
Will you let God move you with compassion? Will you ask Him to use you as a vessel for healing? God was moved with compassion for you. He sent His only Son to die on the Cross for your salvation, healing and deliverance. All He asks in return is that you would be moved with compassion for Him.
Prayer:
Father, I want to be moved with compassion the way Jesus was. I want to care for complete strangers the way the Samaritan did! Give me boldness to be moved with compassion for everyone I meet, in Jesus’ name.
