Commentary from Pastor Michael White:
And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. – Lk. 11:37

The Pharisees were the religious “leaders” of Jesus’ day. They pretended to be holy; but they were really misguided. They wanted other people to think they were holy! But though they knew a lot about God, they missed Jesus when He was right in front of them.

The Pharisees repeatedly tried to kill Jesus (and eventually succeeded). The Pharisees picked a verbal fight with Jesus everywhere He went! Their goal was to publicly shame and humiliate Jesus with extremely specific technical questions about theology (it didn’t work!). Jesus should have had no desire to share a meal with someone like that! But when a Pharisee “asked Him to dine with him,” He did not hesitate. He “went in and sat down to eat.”

Are you willing to dine with those who don’t “deserve” your company, just to give them the Good News? Are you willing to intentionally spend time with people who will slander you to your face just to show them the love of God and the kindness of Jesus? Your ministry is not about you. It is about Him, and making Him known, no matter the cost.

“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you.” – Lk. 6:27-28

Prayer:

Father, I will eat with whomever You want me to. Thank You for giving me the opportunity to preach the Gospel everywhere I go! I want to dine with sinners and hypocrites if it means they will have the chance to hear about Jesus.
