Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

How often they provoked Him in the wilderness, and grieved Him in the desert! Yes, again and again they tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. – Ps 78:41

Did you know it is possible to limit God? We can never limit Him in the absolute sense; but we can specifically limit what He is able to do in our individual lives if we don’t give control of everything over to Him! It might seem blasphemous to say that we could ever limit God. But God has given you free will. Scripture makes clear that His blessings are available for you; but it is your choice as to whether or not to accept His promises! It is your choice as to whether or not you will include Him in every major decision you make, and invite Him to work through you for His glory. It is therefore your responsibility – and privilege – to invite Him into everything you do through prayer!

The children of Israel limited God because they would not obey His commands. They refused to cede control of their actions and desires to God, so He could not move on their behalf. Under the New Covenant, Jesus has satisfied the requirements for obedience; but we can still limit God through doubt and fear. We are called to believe in God, and have faith in His Son Jesus Christ. When we don’t have faith, He will not move on our behalf.

God is unlimited. He can do anything; but we have to invite Him to operate in our lives by yielding ourselves to Him!

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. – Eph 3:20-21

Prayer:

Father, remind me never to limit You. I know You are capable of so much more than I could ever imagine! Help me to believe in Your word, and Your promises, with all my heart, in Jesus’ name.
