Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

“The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, and His word was on my tongue. The God of Israel said…, ‘He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. And he shall be like the light of the morning when the sun rises, a morning without clouds, like the tender grass springing out of the earth, by clear shining after rain.’” – 2 Sam 23:2-4

This is a big moment! David is sharing a specific insight into his prayer life, so we can have a revelation of what God’s Holy Spirit spoke to him. If we are leaders, we must rule 1) justly and 2) with a fear of God. Here is the key to David’s reign. We can glean from his keys to leadership. Perhaps more importantly, we can also learn immensely from the importance David placed on hearing from God and acting on His words.

David didn’t learn the keys to leadership from a podcast or a self-help book. He spent time in God’s presence, and listened to what the Holy Spirit told him. Your key to success isn’t in a New York Times bestseller. It’s not waiting for you at a sold-out conference. It’s in the secret place, where God whispers His secrets to His servants. There are no spark notes to time in prayer, or shortcuts to hearing from God. True intimacy must be practiced; it can never be purchased.

Prayer:

Father, turn my full attention to intimacy with You! I know everything I need is in the secret place. Speak to me face to face, as with a friend, in Jesus’ name!
