Commentary from Pastor Michael White:

And the king of Israel answered and said, “My lord, O king, just as you say, I and all that I have are yours.” – 1 Kings 4:20

Ahab almost said yes to defeat. The king of Syria came up and demanded the wealth, wives, and children of the people of Israel. Ahab wanted to avoid the fight because his enemy seemed larger than life. So he almost gave up!

But he held out for victory. He said no to his enemy’s request, and God delivered his enemy into his hand. First, Israel defeated Syria in the mountains (v 21); then, they issued their enemy a final defeat in the plain (v 29). If Ahab had given up right away, he would have missed the amazing victories God had for him!

Don’t be a doormat. Fight for the promise. God doesn’t want you to avoid every fight at any cost; He wants you to ask Him when to fight, and when to rest. Don’t accept the defeat your enemy – Satan – wants to hand you, and don’t give up on the promise God wants to deliver into your hand!

Prayer:

Father, strengthen me in Jesus’ name. Help me to hold out for the fullness of Your promise! I know You are going to do everything You said You will do, and I thank and praise you in advance.
