CityLight Pastor Commentary:

“…all who were numbered were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty” (Num 1:46). When the Israelites first came into Egypt, there were seventy of them (Ex 1:5). They stayed in Egypt 430 years until the Exodus. By the time the census is taken in today’s reading, there were 603,550 men aged 20 years and older. Accounting for women and children would likely put the total Israelite population somewhere between 2 and 3 million. What’s the point? Even in captivity, God’s people prosper. Even when all odds are against us, God favors His people and allows for multiplication to take place. God grew His nation of Israel from 70 people to over 2 million in 15 generations. Even in captivity, God honored His promise to Abraham that He would bless him and make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and the sand on the seashore (Gen 22:17). No matter your situation, God causes His people to prosper!

Prayer:

“Father, thank You that You favor Your people! I know you will cause me to prosper in every situation. I know that all things work together for my good because I love you. I know that You love me as your child!”
